Youth Organizing: A Pedagogy of Love

“Within an understanding of history as possibility, tomorrow is problematic. In order for it to come, it is necessary that we build it through transforming today. Different tomorrows are possible…It is necessary to reinvent the future. Education is indispensable for the reinvention. By accepting ourselves as active subjects and objects of history, we become beings who make division. It makes us ethical beings.”

(Paulo Freire)

In the most practical, organizing is the process of identifying and defining individual needs and working collectively to meet those needs. Within those efforts, organizing recognizes self-interest, both moral and material, as the motivating factor for civic participation. As well, organizing places much importance on nurturing and developing relationships for capacity building-collectively and personally. However, to build a culture of social justice, one that compliments systems change and targets young people, organizing requires a “Pedagogy of love.”
